I absolutely adore specialty baked goods and will drive long and far for a delicious experience. But why drive far when Leesburg offers some of the best sweets and treats around! Some of these bake shops have literally flipped my opinion of certain baked goods on its head. Here are my top 5 bakeries in Leesburg and what I love best at each.

Best Cupcake: Sweetz Bakery

I love the moist, delicious, unique cupcakes at Sweetz. These really are the best cupcakes around; I have never been disappointed. I routinely order the Carrot Cake cupcake, but if they happen to have the Salted Caramel cupcake on the menu, I’ll opt for that one. Zach pretty much exclusively gets the double chocolate cupcake, which is like a gloriously gourmet version of a ho ho cupcake. I also love that Sweetz offers gluten-free, dairy-free cupcakes, which has made it exceptionally convenient to accommodate different dietary needs when we’ve ordered cupcakes for birthdays!

Best Pie: Mom’s Apple Pie

To be perfectly honest, I’m really not a big pie eater. I’ve just always preferred cake. But then one notable Saturday evening, a sweet neighbor invited our family over for pie and wine. Almond Amaretto Chess Pie: these four words have forever changed my opinion of pie. There really aren’t even words to describe the sweet, custardy profile of this pie. Until recently, I’d never tried chess pie. What an oversight….well, at least if it is chess pie baked by Mom’s Apple Pie. I highly recommend that you head over to Mom’s Apple Pie and buy yourself one of these as soon as possible. Maybe you, too, will have a life-altering pie experience.

Best Bread: South Street Under

It is almost unfair to note South Street for the bread alone because their breakfast sandwiches are the best I’ve ever had. However, a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on regular bread is just an average bacon, egg & cheese sandwich. But a bacon, egg & cheese on ciabatta from South Street is an actual experience. The freshly baked ciabatta bread is absolutely epic, sprinkled with just enough salt on the crust to give it the perfect savory crunch outside, while remaining fluffy and moist inside. There’s definitely a reason the staff wears shirts that say “Ciabatta Bing!” I could (and have) made many a meal out of a loaf of their ciabatta bread and chicken salad. In fact, it has become a staple part of the Mother’s Day tradition in our home!

Best Pastry: Dolce & Ciabatta

I don’t eat pastries for breakfast often, but when I do, its because they are fresh, buttery, and absolutely perfect. Enter: chocolate croissant and almond croissant from Dolce & Ciabatta. Made fresh each and every morning by a pastry genius, you know it will be a morning to remember if you’re drinking hot Illy coffee and a fresh chocolate croissant from Dolce & Ciabatta.

Best Donut: B Donuts

Donuts are pretty blasé, in my opinion. Trendy donut shops have been popping up all over town, and while they are tasty, they’re relatively forgettable, in my opinion. Not B Donuts. No, not at all. B Donuts has not only carved out a niche in Loudoun, they have carved out a place in my heart thanks to their savory gems. If you’ve never tried a savory donut, this is the most ingenious combination since brie and champagne. Think whipped chive cream cheese stuffed into fried airy yeast bread and sprinkled with everything bagel seasoning and bacon. Its an absolute taste explosion, and as unforgettable as possible.
